Brisbane Chorale Concert: Adversity and Hope

1 May 2022 @ 2:30 pm4:00 pm

Fanny Mendelssohn HenselOratorio on the Epidemic of 1831

Felix Mendelssohn42nd Psalm “As the deer longs for water”

These two remarkable works from the Mendelssohn siblings have a common theme – a longing to be lifted out of anguish and suffering, and hope for peace and comfort. But they are very different.

Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel was in the midst of a great European cholera epidemic. Her powerful oratorio was written for the victims of this epidemic in Berlin in 1831. It traces a dramatic arc from the despair of a suffering people to an outpouring of praise and hope for salvation.

Felix Mendelssohn’s setting of the poetic Psalm 42, on the other hand, was composed while on his honeymoon in 1837 – a beautiful, lyrical work with hope and trust at its core. He often described Psalm 42 as his ‘very best sacred composition’.
