What does the word “faith” mean to you?

What does the word “faith” mean to you? Unfortunately, in our time it has been trivialised by some to meaning something more like doctrinal or propositional assent. I think those moments in our lives when we have needed the most courage teach us that faith is much more than this kind of ideological adherence.  Faith is born in us when we acknowledge the limits of our own abilities and even our own lives and work for that which is greater than what we can now see. Faith is an entrusting of ourselves to that which is loving and good, true and eternal, looking for the day when what we hope for will ultimately be revealed and known. It is a sharing in the prophetic imagination of the Spirit who is always working in us and through us to “accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine”. (Ephesians 3:14)

Repairing a roof so that it will outlive us all, providing sanctuary to generations of the future, is an act of faith in the God who creates and sustains us in life and brings healing and peace. It is a wish for those from the future whom we have not yet met, that they too will know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge and be filled with the utter fullness of God.

Grace and peace,
